9 Tips for the Perfect Engagement Photos

As a professional Sydney wedding photographer, one of my greatest pleasures is seeing the utter joy that surrounds a newly engaged couple.

The pure and unadulterated love between you creates an atmosphere that brings a smile to the faces of whoever you’re near – so why not capture the moment forever?

Having a professional engagement photo taken is a great way to immortalise one of the happiest moments in your life.

But we all know the number one question running through your mind…”What do I wear?”

For such an important event, it’s natural to fuss over your wardrobe.

To make the outfit selection process easier for you, I’ve developed a list of 9 tips that I’ve learned from my time specialising in Sydney wedding photography.

Don’t Try to Match Each Other

While the pair of you in a white shirt and blue jeans was all the rage in the 80s, going matchy-matchy has gone out of style.

Instead, try going in contrasting colours. If he’s wearing a blue shirt, why don’t you wear a red dress? It’ll be stunning – so leave those two-for-one outfits at home!

No Fine Stripes or Patterns

This is one that catches a lot of people out. You love the look of your favourite subtle striped shirt, so why not wear it?

Trouble is, while you might think it’s amazing – the camera does not. Unfortunately, when photographed, these styles don’t tend to process very well.

Solid colours and big patterns are winners in this scenario.

Contrasting Colours are Ideal

The last thing you’d want in your romantic forest photoshoot is to blend right into the trees!

Have a think about your location, and dress accordingly. If you’re shooting in a woodland wonderland, select bright, contrasting colours instead of greens or browns.

Want to find out a bit more about contrasting colours? Here’s a colour chart you can check out.

Dress for the Location and Mood

What you wear makes a big impact on the overall tone of your photos. If you’d like them to be formal, then dress up! If you’re into a more casual feel, dress down.

Also, dress for the location! A full-skirted ball gown might be a bit tricky to manoeuvre on a hot day at the beach, whereas a floaty summer dress would do the job nicely.

Complement Your Personality

If you’re a laid-back sort of person, don’t feel as though you need to go for a tuxedo and evening gown look. You need to feel comfortable in your clothes – let your outfit enhance your confidence instead of making you feel like a fish out of water.

So long as you’re not rocking up in your stained and holey sweatshirt, you should be fine. A nice, neatly dressed outfit is perfect no matter what style it is.

No Need to Buy a Whole New Wardrobe

Unless you’re really, really wanting to kit out your wardrobe, it’s not necessary to go on a mad shopping spree for your engagement shoot.

Wearing something you already own works wonderfully – it can even serve to make the moment even more magical.

Why don’t you wear what you wore on your first date? It’ll be a beautiful reminder of your journey together.

Accessories

To polish off your look, don’t be afraid to jazz it up with some accessories.

If you’re wearing a simple dress, why not show off the stunning statement necklace that’s been sitting in your jewellery box? Or, if you’re more lavishly attired, you could complement your outfit with the subtle gleam of diamond studs.

Don’t Think About It Too Much

During my time in Sydney wedding photography, I’ve seen far too many people stress themselves out about what they should wear.

This is a happy day – don’t let anxiety steal your moment!
