Imagine having your wedding in an exclusive island paradise in the middle of nowhere. Lord Howe Island is exactly what you ordered!
When Ash and Mitch contacted me about an elopment in Lord Howe Island, I literally fell off my chair with excitement! I knew that Lord Howe Island is a World Heritage Listed island that is part of New South Wales, but that was about it.
I then did some further research and found out that it is 700 km east of the coast of Port Macquarie and only 400 people live there and only 400 tourists can visit at any given time.
Lord Howe Island is in the middle of nowhere, and that is a good thing and the fact that it is 2 hours away by a small Dash 8 aircraft makes it quite an adventure to get to. As soon as I landed on the island, I felt a sense of peace I could not find anywhere. The locals do not wear shoes, there is no mobile reception anywhere on the island and everyone gets around on a bicycle.
I also learnt that the bird that you keep running into called the Woodhen nearly became extinct and it bounced back to life after the island successfully eradicated rats 4 years ago. As a consequence, there are birds everywhere on this island, an abundance of fish in the ocean and plenty of amazing nature walks.
The island reminds me of Jurassic Park, with its 2 volcanic peaks Mt Gower and Mt Ligdbird dominating the skyline and the fact there are palm trees everywhere makes it look like a dinosaur could pop out anytime and bite you!
OK, so now to the actual wedding...sorry I got bit sidetracked talking about the island. I arrived the day before the wedding day and decided to explore the island with Ash and Mitch and we spent several hours scouting possible photo locations together and at the same time we did a quick photo session while we were at it.
The island is so beautiful that anywhere you go, there's an epic location nearby without anybody to bother you which is a real plus if you ask me. One of the best spots on the island is Lovers Bay, which is the best location to have your wedding ceremony by popular opinion. It overlooks the 2 magestic peaks and has a private beach nearby and right then and there we decided along with Danielle from Love Lord Howe (she's the amazing wedding planner for the island) that this will be our place tomorrow.
The next day arrived and we were met with perfect weather conditons. Sunny, little wind and 25 degrees. Absolute perfection!
Ash and Mitch eloped with myself, Danielle and the celebrant Darcelle and we witnessed a beautiful ceremony that was all about them. No one else. No stress, no dramas, no confetti. They didn't care if their clothes got wet, or dirty.
And to top it off, after we came back from photos around the island Danielle had a beautiful grazing platter waiting for us to top off our afternoon.
They just wanted to celebrate the best they knew, and that was with each other in an island paradise otherwise known as Lord Howe Island.
It is my new favourite place in the world and for good reason. It's simply stunning! You need to visit someday!
If you're planning to elope, make sure you put Lord Howe Island on your list. It will change your life and then some. Like it did for me.
For Ash and Mitch's elopement in Lord Howe Island I did both photo and video as a one person (Hybrid Films).
