You’ve done it. Upon bended knee, you and your partner have made the momentous decision to get married. To tie the knot. To merge your lives into one beautiful future.

It’s truly a magical time – one that you’ll never forget. Over the years to come, this memory will spark a smile on your face, knowing that this was the exact moment when your lives together really began.

However, there is now the small consideration of actually planning your big day.

A lot of people see planning their wedding as some giant, cataclysmic event – fanning the flames of panic as you start to think of everything you need to get organised. Flowers, dresses, venues…where do you even begin! It can get a little daunting.

I speak from experience. As a married man myself and a Sydney wedding photographer, I am fully aware of the chaos that can surround organising your wedding day. But, thankfully, it doesn’t have to be this way for you.

What you need is to take a moment to gather yourself. To get some expert tips on the next steps – just how you can plan out the most important day of your life with as little stress and tears as possible.

During my time as an engagement and wedding photographer in Sydney, I’ve been a part of my fair share of weddings. As such, I’ve picked up some tips that will help you to ensure that planning your wedding is an enjoyable experience – the way it should be!

Pinterest Is Your Friend

Yes, bridal magazines are filled with gorgeous ideas and information. Modern Wedding, Bride or Cosmopolitan Bride are just some of the many, many options out there. But, how often do you want to be shelling out for magazines?

This is where Pinterest makes a fantastic name for itself.

If you’re not familiar with Pinterest, here’s all you need to know: it is your one-stop-shop for wedding ideas, tips and tricks.

From wedding dresses to DIY centerpieces, Pinterest has it all – and in wild abundance.

My first suggestion for planning your wedding is to spend a bit of time looking around on Pinterest. Gather as many ideas as you can – it will really, really help you down the line when it comes to picking venues, decorations, wedding dress styles and the like.

If you want to check it out, my Pinterest page has special inspirational boards filled with ideas for flowers, venues, dresses, hairstyles and much more.

There is No Such Thing as Too Much Investigating

Your big day is a hugely important event – you want everything to be exactly how you desire. As such, there really isn’t any reason why you shouldn’t explore and investigate as many options as possible.

Caterers, restaurants, cakes, venues – all of these businesses are very, very accustomed to showing brides and grooms to be what they can do for them.

My advice? Taste as much food and view as many locations as you can. That way, you’ll know when you find the exact fit for you and your needs.

It’s never too early to start, either. And the earlier you start, the more likely you’ll find what you’re looking for in time to book it.

Don’t Hesitate to Book

On the same note, when you have hit the jackpot and found a cake that is both stunning to eat and look at, don’t hesitate to book it in.

The last thing you want is to hold off in the case that the grass may be greener, only to find that you’ve left it too late.

When you find that perfect cake, venue, caterer or photographer – book it in for your wedding day as soon as you can.

Accept That Some Things Will Go Wrong

While we often shy away from the idea that something will go off the rails, it’s inevitable. Your sister-in-law might not like the main course. One of your bridesmaids might dislike the colour of her dress. Uncle Bernie might want the bagpipes when you’ve booked a quartette.

The point to this? You can’t please everyone.

I’ve lost track of the number of times that I have seen the bride and groom jump through hoops to please others at the expense of their own happiness. This shouldn’t ever happen.

When you start out on your wedding planning journey, keep in mind that every decision you make comes down to what makes you and your partner happy. Stop being influenced by the opinions of others – this is YOUR wedding day! Do what you want!

Download a Wedding Planner List

In this incredible age of technology and information that we live in, it doesn’t take long to find a wedding planner checklist online.

These lists are immensely helpful. They set out key dates and timelines, outlining specific jobs that need to be done.

Some are more in-depth than others, so if you feel like you need a bit more hand-holding during this process, don’t worry. You’ll be able to find one that speaks to your needs.

The Ultimate DIY Wedding Planner Checklist

There’s a lot that goes into planning your special day. But large or small, extravagant or quaint, the end goal is the same. To walk down the aisle and marry your beloved partner, living happily ever after.

I hope that these tips help you to start your planning journey. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me. I’d be happy to assist you in any way I can.
