Wedding Hints and Tips

Where can I have an Indoor wedding ceremony in Sydney?

Will it rain on my wedding day?

What happens when it rains on my wedding day and will I need a plan B?

As a Sydney Wedding Photographer, these are question that I get asked all the time, in fact pretty much every week so I thought I finally answer this question once and for all with a very long and helpful blog post.

Living in Sydney we are blessed with sunshine and great weather most of the time so having a wedding ceremony outdoors is very much a possibility, even in the deepest darkest of winter and even in summer.

But of course, you can never predict what will happen so having a Plan B in the event we do have rain or it’s 45 degrees outside is always a really good idea.

So to help everyone out there planning a wedding ceremony in Sydney, I’ve compiled a list of wedding venues and locations that you can put on your places to check out and see if it ticks all of your boxes, rain hail or shine.

Here’s a few questions to ask yourself before you even begin looking at your wedding venue

  1. Are you planning to have your Sydney wedding ceremony and reception at the same place?
  2. Are you having your wedding ceremony separate from your Sydney Wedding Reception venue?
  3. Does your Sydney Wedding Ceremony Venue have a wet weather backup option?
  4. Is the wedding ceremony venue in Sydney nice enough to be your first choice or only a last resort if it rains?

To help answer these questions, i’ve compiled my favourite list of Sydney Wedding Ceremony venues that you can have your wedding ceremony rain hail or shine.

Beta Events

Fancy getting married in one of Sydney’s hippest and coolest bars?

A historic Victorian building in the heart of Sydney’s CBD, it is a stunning heritage-listed building with exposed brick walls, high ceilings and grand archways for a venue with class, sophistication and old world charm.

Beta Events just recently completed a million dollar refurbishment to make the venue even more epic than it already was.

It has space for a small ceremony in the bar area, or the main area taking advantage of the old world charm  that is really the venue’s greatest feature. It’s also indoors too, so there’s no chance of rain dampening your day!

The food and drink are insanely awesome too,

Three Blue Ducks Roseberry

If you’ve always dreamt about having your wedding in a chic urban warehouse that has killer food and awesome vibes, this is it.

Their philosophy on everything is no-fuss, buying local and ethically farmed produce that makes real food and great company. It’s a foodies dream wedding I reckon!

Located in a converted industrial warehouse with high ceilings, exposed beans and concrete floors, its awesome for those wanting to create an rustic themed wedding that stands out from the ordinary.

You can have your ceremony and location right in the same location in the beautifully designed industrial space.

Kittyhawk

Kittyhawk is a French restaurant and cocktail bar with amazing food and exceptional cocktails. In my eyes that’s a winning combination! The venue is designed around the Liberation of Paris in 1944 and brings an old world charm that’s really unique when it comes to weddings in Sydney.

I recently photographed a wedding here and I was amazed at the level of service, attention to detail and friendliness of their team. They really do go above and beyond to make you extremely happy, not just with the food, drinks but do everything with a smile on their face. And that sometimes will make or break your day!

Starting off with the space, for a small intimate wedding around 50 people you can have the entire top floor away from the usual area so it’s nice and private and away from the general crowd. You have your own dedicated bar team and staff to look after you. The room is adorned with 1940’s liberation posters and makes it a unique and cozy space.

The food here is just amazing and you can tell the French influence in the menu. Think pork terrine, freshly sliced cold meats with cornichons, pork belly and duck confit. Warm, hearty and really really tasty. Plus they have their world famous granita on the dessert menu too! Plus, their cocktails are famous for a reason and why it’s such a popular spot in the Sydney bar scene. It’s definately not your typical wedding venue and that’s why you’ll love it.

You can book the entire venue, hire out one of the levels for a private space for your ceremony, out or you can have a small intimate gathering for 25 persons.

NSW State Library

Did you know you can have your wedding ceremony and reception inside the NSW State Library? Most likely you have not, but something that is quite different that’s for sure.

Inside the very original Mitchell Building houses several rooms suitable for smaller Sydney wedding ceremonies under 100 persons. More recently I photographed in the Friends and gallery rooms. It’s got a lot of old world charm and character.

You can also access one of the rooms that is normally closed to the public, the Shakespeare room where it feels like an old English library room complete with a statue of the old man himself, William Shakespeare.

Palm House – Royal Botanic Garden

best indoor wedding venues in Sydney

One of my favourite fully enclosed ceremony locations in all of the gardens, the Palm House was Australia’s first glasshouse back in the convict days and built in 1876. It’s rustic, charming and has beautiful natural lighting and guaranteed to keep you warm and cozy in winter from those cold draughty winds and a great place to be when it’s raining outside!

Nestled in a beautiful garden setting, natural light floods this stunning glasshouse, providing a unique venue for wedding ceremonies and celebration drinks. I love the lovely natural timber windows and brick paved flooring that makes for lovely Sydney wedding photography.  Just outside you have a really nice garden (actually you have gardens everywhere!) to explore for the bridal party photos and it’s also conveniently located to an amazing wedding reception venue Botanic House.

The Palm House is a blank canvas that can be styled to suit exactly what your needs are, but it doesn’t need much to look great by itself!

Book early to avoid disappointment!

NSW Art Gallery

Simple, elegant and utterly exquisite. Housed in one of the most beautiful art galleries in the world, it’s a pretty unique wedding venue  in Sydney’s wedding scene.

Not only is it a magical space to have your afternoon wedding ceremony, the venue is first and foremost a damn good restaurant headed up by Matt Moran, one of Sydney’s most famous chefs and restauranteurs.

What that means is you’re in for a treat if you decide to have your Sydney wedding here.

The food is splendidly wonderful as expected as too is the selection of wine available.

NOTE: One of the best things to note is that you have exclusive access to have your bridal party photos inside the Art Gallery after it closes (fist pump)

Ovolo Woolloomooloo

If you are seeking a very quirky and eccentric vibe to transform an okay event into something mind-blowingly amazing, well… check this place out. It’s really cool, out there and certainly not your ordinary.

The Piper Room is a a large and versatile space, bristling with industrial chic which still has it’s original features intact with old school wooden floorboards and High ceilings. It’s a great place to have your wedding ceremony whether its raining outside, or perfectly sunny as it’s got its own vibe

Will It Rain On My Wedding Day?

I hope not! Maybe? No?

Anyone’s guess really

Wouldn’t be amazing if we knew the answer to that question so you never have to make a plan B in the event it does!

I personally opted for an outdoor wedding ceremony because i love being outside and i couldn’t see myself getting married indoors, but that’s not to say it’s a bad idea to have your wedding indoors. I had a backup plan to have it in the rotunda next to my park, but luckily for me it didnt rain until after we were in our London Cab driving to reception so we got away with it!

If you do decide to go outdoor for your wedding ceremony, make sure you have a backup plan as you never know what will happen.

In March of 2022, I had a wedding every weekend and every weekend it rained. A lot! So my clients had to put their backup plan in place and have their ceremony indoors whether they wanted to or not.

It’s nearly impossible to pick which months are the going to be rain-free.

Sydney enjoys a sunny climate and mild winters and warm summers. Between the summer months of December – February, Sydney experiences the warmest weather with high humidity.

Most people automatically assume that the summer months are the driest and thus, safest for a clear sunny blue sky wedding. But if you look at the table above, you will see that this is in fact not the case.

As you will see, the average number of average rainy days are pretty much across the board with the exception of July, August and September. You will also see that the warmest days are typically found in January and February (these months are also the most humid). But averages are just that, averages.

You don’t have to be like other couples. You don’t have to check the weather app every day leading up to your wedding day. You don’t have to stress about the weather at all!

Why?

Because Sydney has a number of indoor spaces that are ideal for your dream wedding ceremony. And you can hire them for your wedding day right now!

What If It Does Rain On Our Wedding Day And We Don’t Have A Plan B?

Let’s face it, rain is a good thing in the grand scheme of things. But that doesn’t help you feel any less stressed on your wedding day.

Every wedding photographer, wedding planner, and wedding stylist has had some experience with wet weather. However, if you find that rain is on the cards for your wedding day, here are some things you can do if it rains on your wedding day:

  • Bring some gum boots – so you can still run around and get photos!
  • Buy umbrellas and brave it – for light showers, you can still have a magical outdoor wedding ceremony with umbrellas.
  • Move your ceremony to your reception venue – this will take some logistics but call your wedding reception venue manager and ask if you can move your wedding ceremony to the venue (you’ll then have to tell all your guests of the later start time etc.).

Most important of all, don’t let the weather get to you. Yes, you’re allowed to be upset and frustrated but only for a little bit. The pouring rain didn’t stop Stef and Mark from enjoying her wedding day in the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. You can let it ruin your day, or you can instead roll with the punches and just let it be and still have the most amazing wedding day ever!

So there you go, that’s The 7 Best Indoor Wedding Ceremony Venues In Sydney. Hope you found it useful!

If you have any questions about your wedding photos, I’m here to help! I’m glad to offer any suggestions or tips. I can’t wait to help you and your family take epic and beautiful photos on your big day.
